    Prove your plant knowledge!

The next Certified Plant Professional (CPP) Exam will take place on Thursday, July 24th from 1:00 - 5:00 pm, in Bozeman, MT.

Eligible applicants need to apply online by following the link to register, or submit a completed application, documentation of nursery employment and the appropriate fees to the MNLA office by July 15th. Download the application form here.

LODGING: A room block is available at Country Inn and Suites at a reduced rate of $229/night. There are a limited number of rooms available at this rate. Book early to secure the discounted rate before the room block fills. Call the hotel at: 406.586-2230 and ask for the Montana Nursery & Landscape Association group rate, or book online using this link.

The certification tests are generally given twice a year, in January at the annual Montana Green Expo and in July at the annual Summer Tour. The exam consists of a plant identification test and a written test. The exam is based on the Certification Manual and on practical information gained from employment in the industry, and on identification of the correct genus, species, common name, and cultivar (if appropriate) for each plant.

The ID portion of the exam involves identifying 50 plant samples, and is based upon plants covered in Choosing Trees and Shrubs for Montana Landscapes, by George Evans and Alan Epps, as well as lists of Montana perennials and woody plants. These publications and lists are included in the manual. The second portion of the exam is a 200 question written exam on the principles and practices of virtually all aspects of the nursery industry. A passing grade is 75% for both parts of the exam. Bring at least two sharpened pencils to take the exam. We also recommend that you bring several sheets of scratch paper.

Please see the Education & Certification page on our site for details on eligibility and renewal as well as a number of additional forms and how to order your CPP Manual (a highly recommended book for preparing for the exam). Manuals can be ordered by submitting an order form to the MNLA office.

    • Westscape Wholesale Nursery - A wholesale grower of native and ornamental perennials and shrubs, Westscape is well-established as a supplier of quality locally-grown plant material. They specialize in propagation of hardy native and ornamental plant material that is adapted to our region's harsh environmental conditions. With a facility covering 12,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art greenhouse, plus an additional three acres of outdoor production space, Westscape is uniquely positioned to accept custom grow requests and supply the valley with hard-to-source native plant material.
    • Residential Landscape by: Design.5 Landscape Architecture - Design 5 is a landscape architecture studio dedicated to creating beautiful, functional, and sustainable outdoor spaces that contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities, and the environment in the Rocky Mountain West. We will tour one of their residential landscape design/installs, featuring an outdoor living area with a custom bocce court, expansive flagstone patio and custom wood walkways and benches. Custom metal planters are integrated into the front entry staircase, showcasing plantings that were selected for both sustainability and visual interest. This modern landscape was beautifully installed by Sprout, and is a perfect blend of functional entertainment space and aesthetic appeal.
    • Montana Seed Lab @ Marsh Laboratory - The State Seed Lab processes seeds from across Montana, assessing germination rate, purity, and the value of seed lots. The ultimate purpose of seed testing is to determine the value of seed for planting. Montana State Seed Testing Lab services samples primarily from Montana but also from many of the western states and Canada. Their focus is on purity analysis, germination, seed identification and tetrazolium testing. Results generated help ensure truth in labeling. They provide testing services for the Montana Seed Growers Association, MT Department of Agriculture, BLM, Forest Service, small and large scale farmers, cleaning plants, as well as you and your neighbors! Got a burr in your sock after a hike? Bring it in and they will identify it for you.
    • Cashman Nursery - Growing since 1898, the Cashman family has a legacy in the nursery business. Originally founded in 1898 by Thomas Eugene Cashman in Minnesota, the business eventually made its way to Bozeman, MT where Cashman Nursery continues to grow and thrive under the oversight of Jerry, Jan, Mike, and Joe Cashman. Cashman's full-service garden center carries a huge selection of Northern-grown trees, shrubs, and over 300 varieties of perennial flowers, bedding plants, and seeds. They also run a full-service landscape division for residential and commercial projects around the Gallatin Valley. One of the trademarks of Cashman Nursery is their commitment to expertise - they proudly employ 12 Certified Plant Professionals and hold educational seminars throughout the year as part of their community outreach.
    • Visser Greenhouses - Home of the largest annual and perennial variety list in Montana, Visser's roots in the Gallatin Valley run deep. Opening in 1972, and moving to their current location in 1984, Visser has seen steady expansion until they reached more than 50 greenhouses. Each year, they ship millions of plants and have become one of Montana's largest wholesale operations. They offer an extensive selection of plants, including annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs in a wide range of sizes. When we tour Visser, they will be in the height of fall mum production; we will get a personal tour of the facility and learn exactly how they do everything they do - from spring annuals to fall mums.
    • Rathvinden Farm - Rathvinden is a small cut flower and vegetable farm north of Bozeman in the Springhill Community. The majority of crops at the farm are sold to florists for weddings and events, there is also a flower CSA offered to the public, and specialty vegetables grown for CSA members and restaurants. The guiding principle at Rathvinden is health, not just health for  humans, but for everything. This means using no pesticides or herbicides, fertilizing with compost and organic manure, eliminating tillage, practicing crop rotation, using natural predators whenever possible, and leaving space for wildlife. Rathvinden is a gaelic word meaning fort of the faeries, and is named after the original Rathvinden, a 500-year-old family farm on the River Barrow in County Carlow, Ireland.
    • Gardening Under the Big Sky - Welcome back to our little oasis. 6 years have gone by since the MNLA was last here. I am still waiting for red lava rock to come back in vogue. So far no dice, but if bell bottoms and tie dye made a return, I have hope. Stroll the grounds, there are benches to set a spell and relax. The trees are more mature so there are plenty of shady spots. The chickens and other fowl will be happy for any bits you give to them. I have done my best to spruce the place up. (Nothing lights a fire under your butt like having company). There might be a weed or two hiding in the flowers, and the lawn gets watered by hand, so forgive any imperfections. Just enjoy the views and greenery. We are happy to have you here.
    • Plant Growth Center @ MSU - It is tempting to call the Plant Growth Center a greenhouse, but the $5.3 million dollar facility completed in 1987 is much more. There are 20 greenhouses environmentally controlled by microcomputers, an insect quarantine unit, labs, and classrooms. The high tech systems that regulate temperature, light and humidity allow researchers to grow four to five generations of plants annually instead of just two. An indoor arboretum is located inside the main foyer.
    • Schutter Diagnostic Lab - Services provided by the Schutter Diagnostic Lab include diagnosis of plant diseases, insect damage, and environmental plant problems, as well as visual assessment of herbicide injury to plants. The lab also  provides identification services for plants, insects, and mushrooms and gives management recommendations when needed. The Schutter Lab works closely with state extension agents and horticulture professionals, as well as the general public. They are an important resource for identifying and documenting new organisms in our state, diagnosing diseases, and providing education on Integrated Pest Management. We will tour the lab and see the process samples go through - from submission to identification.
